David by Michelangelo - Florence

This instantly recognizable statue lives in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. There are many other great sculptures there, but this is what the people come to see.

If there was any doubt about Michelangelo's talent, it takes only one look at David to see why he is so reknown. As you move around, there is not any feature in this marble carving that is not perfect. If his hands look too large, it is only because of the design. Michelangelo wanted to highlight this feature to show David's strength. The pose is how Michelangelo imagined that David would look shortly after deposing of Goliath.

This would be one of the must-sees when you visit Florence - even if the lines seem a little long at times.
