Canals in Venice
Canals are the bloodstream of Venice. They don't have cars or trucks trasporting people and goods around town, so the canals are invaluable - just as streets are in any other town. But you'll see more than gondolas making thier way through this vast network.
Deleviery boats, water taxis, personal craft and even ambulances will wind their way under bridges and around tight bends to get to where they need to be. There is of course the Grand Canal and other larger waterways, but there are many of the smaller canals like the one at right that flow past old buildings and next to people's back doors and windows.
As you walk around, you'll see the damage that water has done to the buildings that have sat in the water for centuries. That they are still standing is a testament to their engineering and modern day restoration efforts. If all goes well, Venice will be around for generations of visitors, and stand as reminder of times gone past.
