San Diego, California

This shot was taken in July of 2005. One of the great things about San Diego is that you have a choice of the mega-tourist giant theme park, or you can visit some of the lessor known attractions and still have a great time.

Since this was my first time down there, I didn't feel the need to visit the San Diego Zoo or Sea World or Legoland, etc. In this case, I visited the Maritime Museum down on the waterfront. Unlike some museums, this one is alive with the history it is telling. For one admission, you can board a variety of ships - including a Russian submarine.

The photo at the right is of the Star of India, a ship that sailed the oceans over a century ago. Another ship you can visit is the Surprise - made famous in the movie "Master and Commander" starring Russell Crowe. There are also some smaller ships, each unique in thier construction, stories and history.

After visiting the Maritime Museum, check out the Seaport Village for restaurants, shops and galleries.
